At the heart of the network: neighbourhood quarrels among ground squirrels

A movie by Aurélien Prudor - Wild Talks

There are many examples of animals living in communities in the animal kingdom. Living in a group provides many benefits. However, within their community, Dotka and Tribale, two ground squirrels from the Canadian Rocky Mountains, have to deal with their peers. What if this social environment influences their chances of reproducing? Or even their life expectancy? An international research team is attempting to answer these questions by deciphering the effect of social stress on the health of these small mammals. A journey to the heart of their social network that makes us think about the parallels with our own human societies.

With Vincent A. Viblanc, CNRS Research Fellow at the Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (CNRS, Unistra) and Aurélien Prudor, director.

PUBLIC CONFERENCE - Tuesday 22.03.2022

The place of science in biodiversity conservation (only in French since intended for a general audience)

Human activities are responsible for a loss of biodiversity that could lead to a 6th mass extinction. Many organizations and institutions are trying to better understand this phenomenon and to provide solutions to limit the impact of human activities. This is how a new field of scientific research came to life: conservation biology. This very recent field is based on the fundamental and applied knowledge of ecology for a triple objective of restoration, protection and/or management of biodiversity. In this conference we will address the question of the place of science in the protection of biodiversity. Four speakers will discuss their projects in conservation biology. Although they work in very different organizations, they all have in common the fact that they participate in the publication of articles in international scientific journals. First, a moderator will present the subject and ask questions to the different speakers (about 1 hour). These exchanges will highlight the diversity of scientific approaches as well as their advantages and limitations in the context of the current ecological crisis. The emphasis will be put on the popularization of their work in order to make science accessible to all. Then, spectators will be invited to discuss and ask questions (about 30 min).
